Before You Start
- Confirm your Medicare Part A and Part B effective dates. Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is tied to your Part B start date, not your birthday.
- Mark your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period on a calendar. During this window, insurers cannot deny you or charge more for health conditions.
- Gather your Medicare number and current prescription list.
Comparing Plans
- Decide between Plan G and Plan N (or the plan that fits your needs). Compare the actual cost difference, not just the letter.
- Get quotes from at least three carriers for the identical plan letter. Coverage is standardized by law — price and service are what differ between carriers.
- Check that the plan is actually sold in your state.
- Ask each carrier about its rate-increase history, not just today's price.
Enrolling
- Confirm your guaranteed-issue rights if enrolling outside your Open Enrollment window.
- Ask whether a household or multi-policy discount applies.
- Get every quote and promise in writing before you sign anything.
- Never pay by cash, gift card, or wire transfer — a red flag for scams.
After You Enroll
- Keep copies of your application and confirmation paperwork.
- Only cancel prior coverage after your new policy is confirmed active.
